Antonio Alcalde Barriga is better known for promoting the foundation of the University of Guadalajara and the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara.

1701

Born in Cigales, in the Valladolid province in the Kingdom of Spain.

1717

Entered the Order of Preachers at age of 15 in the San Pablo convent in Valladolid.

1719

Assumed the religious habit.

1725

Was ordained a priest.

1751

Elected in several times to be the manager of a few convents of his order.

1760

King Carlos III visited one of the convents and became impressed with Alcalde for his virtue and his organizational abilities.

1761

Alcalde was made bishop of Yucatan, in Mexico, by the King Carlos III.

1771

Was appointed as the Bishop of Guadalajara.

1778

Created Las Cuadritas, 1580 low-income shelters. The earnings were used for charity.

1784

Founded the Santa Clara internship for girls and young women.

1787

Convinced the Guadalajara's government to create the biggest hospital in America, the Guadalara's Civil Hospital.

1791

Promoted and sponsored the founding of the Guadalajara University.

1792

Dies in Guadalajara. The inventory of his assets at the time of his death was 267 pesos.
